Todd Penland: A Living Listening Room

The Brief
Most musician websites are digital brochures: a bio, some links, maybe an embedded playlist. Todd Penland wanted something fundamentally different. The goal was an immersive, custom-built music experience that put the listener at the center, a “living listening room” where the music never stops, no matter where you navigate on the site.
The client, in this case, was me.
The Challenge
Building a persistent audio experience on a WordPress site is not straightforward. The moment a visitor navigates to a new page, the browser reloads and the audio stops. Solving that problem without abandoning WordPress, and without sacrificing the flexibility, SEO, and content management capabilities that WordPress provides, required a custom architectural approach.
The solution was PJAX: a technique that loads new page content via AJAX and updates the browser URL without triggering a full page reload. Every page transition on the site happens seamlessly in the background while the audio player in the footer continues playing uninterrupted.
This is not a plugin. It is a custom implementation woven into the fabric of the child theme.
What Was Built
todd.penland.net is part of a WordPress multisite installation with a custom Hello Elementor child theme and no reliance on plugins for core functionality. Every custom feature lives in the theme itself.
The site includes:
- Persistent footer audio player: A fixed global player that survives every page navigation, with playback controls, track and album display, and a native audio progress bar
- PJAX navigation: Seamless page transitions that preserve audio playback state across the entire site
- 439+ individual track pages: Each of Todd’s compositions has its own WordPress post at a clean URL, with SEO handled through a combination of Rank Math Pro and custom meta tag overrides built into the theme
- Synchronized lyrics display: A custom tap-to-sync admin editor generates LRC-format timed lyrics data, which is then displayed on the front end in karaoke style, synchronized to playback in real time
- Custom analytics engine: Play tracking, visitor sessions, page views, and a Chart.js admin dashboard with date filtering, bot detection, and admin exclusion
- Gamification and participation system: Engagement metrics, registered user stats, real-time admin bar displays, and public member profile pages
- Playlist system: Full CRUD playlists with drag-and-drop reordering, shuffle, and public sharing via token-based URLs
- Community features: Custom login and registration modals, member profiles, a follow system, activity feeds, and a custom comment system
- Music licensing system: WooCommerce variable products auto-created per track, four license tiers, custom checkout fields, and delivery policy automation
- BPM detection: An automated Python batch script using librosa that fetches audio from the CDN, analyzes tempo, and saves results via REST API
- YouTube Shorts automation: A custom Python system that automatically prepares short-form video content for tracks in the catalog, streamlining the process of publishing music to YouTube
- Todd Penland Radio: A persistent streaming radio experience integrated into the same global player
Audio is served from an external CDN at audio.penland.net, keeping the main server lean and streaming performance high.
The Ongoing Nature of the Work
todd.penland.net is not a finished project. It is a living platform that continues to evolve. New features are designed, architected, and implemented on a rolling basis, each one required to be fully compatible with the PJAX navigation architecture that underlies the entire experience.
Every feature added to this site is a demonstration of the same discovery-led development process that defines the way I work with clients: understanding the problem deeply, designing a solution that fits the architecture, and building it to last.
A Note on This Site
A recent client discovered InstantImpact through todd.penland.net while browsing the musical theatre portfolio. The footer of that site carries a simple credit: “Designed and developed by InstantImpact.io.” That credit is the most honest demonstration of what this portfolio site is trying to say.
