Texas Instruments Japan: LAN/WAN Redesign Specification

The Project

In 1994, Texas Instruments was operating three semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities in Japan and undertaking a complete redesign of their LAN/WAN network infrastructure across all three sites. A project of that scale required rigorous, detailed documentation to manage the design specification: a system that could track every component, every decision, and every dependency across an enormously complex technical environment.

I was deployed on-site in Japan by Virtual Web, a technology firm based in Fredericksburg, Virginia, to develop and maintain that specification system. I spent nearly two years working directly in the wafer fabs, embedded in the project from 1994 through 1996.

The Work

Using Microsoft Excel, I built a structured system to capture and maintain the complete design specification for the LAN/WAN redesign across all three facilities. The system needed to be detailed enough to serve as the authoritative reference for the project while remaining accessible to the engineers and project managers who depended on it daily.

Working on-site in an active semiconductor manufacturing environment meant understanding not just the technical requirements of the network design, but the operational realities of the facilities themselves: the constraints, the dependencies, and the consequences of getting things wrong in a production wafer fab.

The Context

This was my first professional software development engagement, and it was anything but an entry-level assignment. Working embedded in three industrial facilities in Japan, collaborating with Texas Instruments engineering staff, and maintaining specification documentation for a major infrastructure project at that scale shaped the way I approach complex technical work to this day.

The discipline of capturing requirements precisely, tracking design decisions systematically, and producing documentation that engineers can actually use in the field. That foundation was built in those wafer fabs in Japan.
